European Collection of Cell Cultures currently holds over 40,00 cell lines
representing 45 different species, 50 tissue types, 300 HLA types, 450
monoclonal antibodies and at least 800 genetic disorders. The maintenance
of such a diverse collection has inevitably produced a high level of
specialist knowledge, which enables ECACC to position itself as a centre of
expertise in all aspect of cell culture. ECACC accepts deposits of animal
and other cell lines, hybridomas, HLA-defined human B-lymphoblastoid cell
lines and DNA probes. In addition to supply of cell lines, ECACC also
provides a range cell culture services including mycoplasma testing, patent
depository, cell banking, EBV immortalisation, safe deposit services and
training courses. More recently ECACC has diversified into new product
areas, which includes a range of genomic DNA resources for use in genetic
research.

ECACC forms part of the Business Division of the newly formed Protection
Agency that reports to the UK Department of Health. ECACC continues to
operate out of the Centre for Applied Microbiology and Research (CAMR),
which is now the Health protection Agency, Porton Down. ECACC is supported
from a combination of sources, including the UK Research Councils (MRC,
BBSRC, NERC), the World Health Organisation and revenue from sales and
provision of technical services.
